The past indigenous Islamic movements in this country were militant, independent, and liberation-oriented. Our movements and organizations today must revive these characteristics (i.e., Re-Africanization of the Islamic Movement). We must be visionary—guided by high Islamic ideals and principles—as well as missionary—willing to do the work necessary to achieve the vision. As we work, we must operate on a high level of self-discipline and courage.
In recent years, the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare has initiated cutting-edge planning and work in the field of de-Israelization of the global Islamic movement. As Muslims, we must stop reacting to others’ expectations and demands and avoid integration and assimilation into the warmongering criminal system of the U.S. government. We must give up apologetic attitudes that have no place in our current circumstance and stand up firmly against tyranny and injustice.

The global consciousness awakening has arrived, and it will be televised. All of humanity is waking up at the same time with a global vision of a new world, full of unlimited possibilities. People across the globe are calling for a new deal for the Earth and all of its living organisms—human, animal, plant, and beyond. We must visualize that world and start to connect and organize with those who can also see it and, more importantly, who are willing to work for it.

Together, we must develop a plan of action and work with missionary zeal to bring about and play a role in the Earth liberation movement which aims to free the Earth from the parasitical behavior of man; establish a non-predatory system of interconnected global harmony; nurture and further a culture of “Earth-first” custodianship; understand and respect the rights of the Earth, which should be treated as a living organism (which it is); and envision and actualize a global redesign for the 21st century.

During this period of global evolution, we are reaching out to all peoples of good will who wish to participate in the effort of global re-design. Toward achieving this ultimate vision, we are working diligently to reform even those who have worked and cooperated with Zionist American organizations as saboteurs, agent provocateurs, infiltrators, and traitors. This includes misguided believers who have snitched on their own brothers and sisters.

As-Sabiqun’s 5-point program begins with forgiveness. Imam Musa has survived over 30 years of direct conflict with the FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, TAS, NSA, etc., yet he is still here, full of kindness toward a whole plethora of individuals who cannot cure their addiction to snitching. Unbeknownst to them, the solution to this problem is quite simple: say “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad ar-Rasulullah” and remain firm.

In September, Imam Musa returned from the first International Conference on Islamic Awakening, held in Tehran, which brought together more than 700 scholars, thinkers, pioneers of the Islamic resistance movement, dignitaries, and political, cultural, and media figures as well as Islamic parties and associations from across the globe. During the two-day conference, the theoretical foundations and history of the Islamic Awakening were discussed and the latest developments, challenges, and outlooks were assessed.

The conference was inaugurated by the enlightening and thought-provoking address of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed ‘Ali Khamanei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic, and was followed by an exchange of views among participants in plenaries and specialized meetings which were held to address: 1) the historical, conceptual, and theoretical foundations of the Islamic Awakening; 2) prominent players in the Islamic Awakening; 3) challenges and threats facing the Islamic Awakening; 4) the goals and objectives of the Islamic Awakening; and 5) the outlook and future prospects of the Islamic Awakening.

On December 18, 2011, the topics to be discussed will include:

A. Re-Africanization of the Islamic Movement in the USA.

The past indigenous Islamic movements inside of the USA were militant, independent, strongly on the Sunnah, and liberation-oriented. Our movements and organizations today must revive these characteristics.
We must be visionary, guided by the ideals and principles laid out in the following ayahs: “Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, ‘I am of those who bow in Islam’? Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint—None but persons of the greatest good fortune.” (41:33-35)
We must be missionary—willing to do the work necessary to achieve the vision.

In fulfilling the above, we must operate on a high level of self-discipline and courage.

B. De-Israelization of the Islamic Movement in North America.

Our behavior should benefit Islam and Muslims first. We must stop reacting to others’ expectations and demands.
We must avoid integration and assimilation into the warmongering criminal system of the U.S. government.
We must stand up against tyranny and injustice: “O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: For Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.” (4:135)
Stop apologizing for being a Muslim! In our current circumstances, this apologetic attitude has no place.

C. "Peace" Awareness.
We are in the process of improving and clarifying a new language of liberation. 20th century language, with its focus on “war”, has no place in the current global evolutionary movement. President Johnson (1965-1969) declared at one time a “war on poverty”. We have had 40 years of a “war on drugs”, a “war on crime”, etc., to no avail. We are developing a new language, a language of peace and prosperity, to apply in our current circumstances and help usher in a new era of human progress. Toward establishing this new language of liberation, there will accordingly be a shift in our terminology:

We have mentioned our engagement in an “air war” (psychological war) with our enemies. We are now striving for an “air peace”.

D. Islamic Dialectical Idealism.

Islamic dialectical idealism views change as natural, constant, historical, and evolutionary. We must strive for a high level of self-determination, by which the events that affect us are directed by our idealism and not vice versa. Currently, we are not in control of our lives, situations, or events. In selecting and defining a future for ourselves, we must be very brave and innovative. Without a plan or strategy, we are subject to wherever the winds of change take us.

E. Safeguard the rights and security of Muslims and all Americans.

Our primary goal in this theatre of operations is to guard and protect the rights and security of Muslims and all Americans. We have survived more U.S. and Israeli fitnah than any other group our size in modern U.S. history. As we have striven to stand up to the true enemies of God and humanity, we have been encircled, suppressed, infiltrated, sabotaged, and flooded with agent provocateurs in each of the locations where we have worked, including Oakland, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Sea-Tac, Denver, and Washington, DC.

Battlespace awareness is an awareness and understanding of the battlespace, or military theatre of operations—including air, information, land, sea, and space—to an extent that allows the commander to maintain control of the terrain and maximize benefits. Gaining information about the operational area—the environment, factors, and conditions, including the status of friendly and adversary forces, neutrals and noncombatants, and terrain—enables timely, relevant, comprehensive, and accurate assessments so as to make appropriate projections, successfully apply combat power, and complete the mission.
In today’s war, we are battling for the minds and hearts of humanity. We must rise to the occasion of our time and act on a heroic level. We must harness all of the tools we have at our disposal—media, books, Internet, movies, CDs and DVDs—to raise the banner of Islam.
The Islamic Institute has chosen psychological guerrilla warfare as its strategy for combating global Zionist American hegemony. Psychological guerrilla warfare gives a small organization with limited resources and outstanding discipline, courage, and deeply-rooted faith to make the best of their situation. * This fundraising luncheon is being held with a special consideration to raise funds and awareness for two important causes: 1) pursuing the freedom of Imam Jamil, who remains isolated in prison under 23-hour lockdown; and 2) providing assistance to the family of the late Imam Luqman, who was brutally assassinated by the FBI. *

Masjid Al-Islam has survived a 30-year war launched by the Zionist American cabal. We have thrived in spite of the opposition’s small gains: they closed Masjid Al-Islam in Denver in 1983 through infiltration, kidnapping, and destabilization—carried out by agent provocateurs, snitches, informants, and hypocrites; they have also managed to bring to a halt the work of our branches in San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Philadelphia, and SeaTac (Washington State). Nevertheless, we have continued to move forward with full gusto. We have viewed our challenges as opportunities.

On February 6th this year, we opened an office in Oakland, CA, for the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare. Sunday, March 6th marked the opening of our DC office. Through this new institute, we are rising to the occasion of our time and acting on a heroic level by facing Zionist Americanism directly. Our branch in Oakland, CA, will be home for some important projects:

A. College of Islamic Movement Studies. We will offer 3-month intensive summer courses in the following areas:

Arabic (special emphasis on implementation over mere academic study)
Qur’an and Hadith studies (including the study of tafsir, which will shed light on application of the Qur’an and Sunnah in our daily lives—not just for recitation at conferences)
Akhlaq (Islamic character, ethics, and values)
Historical study of various Islamic movements, their influences, and their impact on society. Students will examine their messages and their missions and learn how to translate their knowledge and experiences into a useful format for application in today’s world, considering the factors of time, place, and environmental circumstances. Individuals and movements to be examined include: the Ikhwan al-Muslimin, Jama’at Islami, the Sokoto Khilafah established by Shaikh ‘Uthman dan Fodio, Imam Khomeini’s movement, and Dr. Kalim Siddiqui’s writings.

It's the holy month of Ramadan and many of us are busy fulfilling the obligation of fasting and performing extra acts of worship, such as nafl prayers, dhikr, du'as, etc. Meanwhile, our Palestinian brothers and sisters are being slowly and silently starved to death. Can we do anything more for them than make du'as?

As we work to purify ourselves during this holy month, we are presented with an opportunity to go beyond du'as. On Friday, Aug. 26th, join us in New York City's Times Square at 3:30 pm as we gather for the annual Al-Quds Day rally. Yep, that's right--this year, DC's Al-Quds Day Committee decided to join hands with the NY, NJ, PA, and CT Al-Quds Day Committees to hold a regional gathering. Local organizers are working on chartering a bus from the DC area up to NYC and back. WHAT IS AL-QUDS DAY?

Al-Quds is Arabic for Jerusalem, the Holy Land. Yawm-al Quds or Al-Quds Day is a day of solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians in their struggle against the Zionist-apartheid system of Israel. Al-Quds Day also extends beyond Palestine to support all oppressed people in their struggles across the world. The number of U.S. prison inmates has more than quadrupled in the last 30 years.

Despite the aura of omnipotence that most empires project, a look at history should remind us that they are fragile organisms. So delicate is their ecology of power that when things start to go bad, empires can unravel in a hurry. For example, look at fall of the Soviet Union from 1989-1991, or the fall of Great Britain in the 17-year period between World War I and World War II.

It seems that the once all-powerful USA could suffer a global stroke sometime during the 2020s or even sooner.

Although future historians may identify the Bush administration, the invasion of Afghanistan (2001), and the invasion of Iraq (2003) as the start of America’s downfall, we believe that the real starting point of America’s decline was born out of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979).

We view America’s decline as a global power as a present reality. Should we not prepare for its fall? Let us prepare and work for a new global harmony—a wholistic world vision. We invite everyone to planetary transformation; a global re-design. It is possible. It is the impossible dream.

We see the 21st century as the evolutionary century. The evolution of Muslims is particularly necessary if Islam is to play its proper role in the coming future.

“Ye are the best of Peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah…” (Al ‘Imran, 3:110)

If Muslims are to live out their role as khaira Ummah—the “best of peoples” or the “best community”—the Islamic movement must consciously subject itself to an evolutionary process. That is, Muslims must rise to the occasion of our time. We must, as a movement and as a people, evolve to the level necessary to develop the institutions in all areas which would propel us to emerge out of the gravity of self-imposed stagnation.

Toward this goal, we have opened two branch offices for the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare. We have some exciting and important projects in the making, including: a College of Islamic Movement Studies, which will offer classes in Arabic, practical Qur’an and Hadith studies, Akhlaq (Islamic character), historical study of various Islamic movements, and strategic management under conditions of repression; a high-quality physical fitness program which will be results-oriented; and a Department of Strategic and Islamic Studies which will focus on analysis of world events affecting Muslims and strategic planning for the making of a better world.

A proper analysis of the situation of Muslims locally, nationally, and internationally, would show us that Muslims are not in control of their lives, situations, or events. In selecting and defining a future for ourselves, we must be very brave and innovative. Without a plan or strategy, we are subject to wherever the winds of change take us; we surrender our self-determination and limit ourselves to prevalent trends, currents, and circumstances. We must remind ourselves: Our future should not be determined by our past—it should be determined by our imagination.

Imagination is key. In order to succeed as Islamic workers, we can use our imagination to visualize the proper Islamic movement for this evolutionary century. Let us see ourselves as great problem-solvers and great communicators of truth, with the God-given ability to transform and re-create any kind of society we wish for.

“The Islamic Center for Human Excellence, in Little Rock, Arkansas, has received permission from a local planning commission, reported KLRT-TV and the Arkansas Times, to build an Islamic community to include a mosque, a school, 22 homes, and the adhan call-to-prayer broadcast by loudspeaker five times a day. It appears the community will be open only to Muslims. Further, Imam Aquil Hamidullah explains, the goal is ‘to have a clean community,’ which he describes as one ‘free of alcohol, drugs, and free of gangs’…”

“An undated article on the Muslim Link Paper website tells the story of the Gwynnoaks Muslim Residential Development effort in Baltimore, where 85 to 100 families in an eight-block radius are all Muslim. It was initiated by Yahya Cason, at that time an engineer with a large company, looking for a place to raise his family. Out of his efforts now exists a group of property developers, The Development Group, that claims twenty to thirty employees. Another article, on the American Planning Association website, traces Gwynnoaks to 9/11 and the need American Muslims felt both to ‘protect themselves from the racist backlash that occurred in the wake of the attacks and to reach out to educate the public on the moral and social framework that the vast majority of American Muslims abide by.’ In this case, at least, there seems to be no legal restrictions against non-Muslims, nor any taxpayer monies involved…”

“As-Sabiqun, which describes itself as ‘an Islamic movement/organization’ founded by Abdul Alim Musa and based in Washington, D.C., and Oakland, CA, announces on its homepage an intent to ‘establish Islamic homes and build model communities where Islam is lived.’ A page devoted to the group's mission statement and goals elaborates:

“Through our work and sacrifice, we hope to become a model ‘Islamic community.’ We define an Islamic community as one which is self-sufficient, independent, and well-guided. A community in which true brotherhood and sisterhood is clearly defined and practiced. We do not, however, limit ourselves by defining ‘community’ as one geographical location. Instead, we intend to establish, with the help of Allah, multiple masjid-centered communities across the country.

“Additional Comments: (1) For more on the leader of this group, see DiscoverTheNetworks.org. (2) As-Sabiqun does not make explicit whether it intends to exclude kafirs from its model communities but that would certainly be consistent with its outlook and tactics – attaining ‘total economic independence’ and creating a ‘comprehensive educational system’…”

“A soft landing for America 40 years from now? Don’t bet on it. The demise of the United States as the global superpower could come far more quickly than anyone imagines. If Washington is dreaming of 2040 or 2050 as the end of the American Century, a more realistic assessment of domestic and global trends suggests that in 2025, just 15 years from now, it could all be over except for the shouting…

“But have no doubt: When Washington's global dominion finally ends, there will be painful daily reminders of what such a loss of power means for Americans in every walk of life. As a half-dozen European nations have discovered, imperial decline tends to have a remarkably demoralizing impact on a society, regularly bringing at least a generation of economic privation. As the economy cools, political temperatures rise, often sparking serious domestic unrest...”

WHAT WE SAY

The America that we knew as children has long gone. Therefore, it is now our responsibility to establish a safe and nurturing environment for our families and communities. This is our duty as Muslims.

The USS Titanic has hit the global and historical iceberg and refuses to ask Allah (swt) for help. However, this does not mean that our own hopes, dreams, and aspirations should sink with it. Ignoramuses like Daniel Pipes and Steve Emerson would want precisely that. The Qur’an is clear:

“…Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be Companions of the Fire and will abide therein.” (2:217)

“O ye who believe! If any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him—lowly with the Believers, mighty against the Rejecters, fighting in the Way of Allah, and never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the Grace of Allah, which He will bestow on whom He pleaseth. And Allah encompasseth all, and He knoweth all things. Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the (Fellowship of) Believers—those who establish regular prayers and regular charity, and they bow down humbly (in worship). As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the (Fellowship of) Believers—it is the Fellowship of Allah that must certainly triumph.” (5:54)

How ignorant and arrogant these people are--people like Steve Emerson and Daniel Pipes, who challenge what we do in the most ignored and neglected communities in the United States, such as East Oakland, CA, and Southeast Washington, DC. We challenge the Daniel Pipes and Steve Emersons of this world to come down here and help keep the people alive, out of prison, and out of drug houses! We ask them, with their billions, to help reunite families, build high-quality educational institutions, and develop an environment where positive expectations about the future are a norm!

There are White communities, Black communities, Mexican communities, Jewish communities, Irish, Italian, etc. Suppose we said to any of these people, “We don’t want you people to live together because it is a threat to American security!” This is how far the hate-mongers inside and outside of America have gone with their Islamophobia! My name is Abdul Alim Musa. I am not intimidated by any Nazi-Zionists. They are setting the Muslims up, just as Hitler set up the Jews in Germany in the 1930s.

With trust in Allah (swt), I call all of you punks out! If you are sure of yourselves, meet me out in the open, face-to-face, on any TV show, lecture hall, university; anywhere, anytime. Push for a truly global Islamic news service.

Masjid Al-Islam has survived a 30-year war launched by the Zionist American cabal. We have thrived in spite of the opposition’s small gains: they closed Masjid Al-Islam in Denver in 1983 through infiltration, kidnapping, and destabilization—carried out by agent provocateurs, snitches, informants, and hypocrites; they have also managed to bring to a halt the work of our branches in San Diego, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and SeaTac (Washington State). Nevertheless, we have continued to move forward with full gusto. We have viewed our challenges as opportunities.

On February 6th this year, we opened an office in Oakland, CA, for the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare. Sunday, March 6th marked the opening of our DC office. Through this new institute, we are rising to the occasion of our time and acting on a heroic level by facing Zionist Americanism directly. Our branch in Oakland, CA, will be home for some important projects:

A. College of Islamic Movement Studies. We will offer 3-month intensive summer courses in the following areas:

Arabic (special emphasis on implementation over mere academic study)
Qur’an and Hadith studies (including the study of tafsir, which will shed light on application of the Qur’an and Sunnah in our daily lives—not just for recitation at conferences)
Akhlaq (Islamic character, ethics, and values)
Historical study of various Islamic movements, their influences, and their impact on society. Students will examine their messages and their missions and learn how to translate their knowledge and experiences into a useful format for application in today’s world, considering the factors of time, place, and environmental circumstances. Individuals and movements to be examined include: the Ikhwan al-Muslimin, Jama’at Islami, the Sokoto Khilafah established by Shaikh ‘Uthman dan Fodio, Imam Khomeini’s movement, and Dr. Kalim Siddiqui’s writings.
Strategic Management under Conditions of Repression, in which Imam Musa will share the insights he has gained from the 35 years of survival and success of Masjid Al-Islam and the As-Sabiqun movement, which have faced opposition from the likes of the FBI, Homeland Security, Zionist groups, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Daniel Pipes, Steve Emerson, FOX News, 80% snitch rate, saboteurs, informants, infiltrators, agent provocateurs, Mossad-types, and others who have sought to isolate us from mainstream Muslims and derail and destroy the progress of our schools, places of worship, and businesses.

B. High-Quality Physical Fitness Program. This will be a realistic, practical, results-oriented fitness program, with the following regular features:

Daily runs in the Oakland Hills
Weight-training
Boxing

C. Department of Strategic and Islamic Studies. This department will focus on:

Hip Hop Reaches Out

We were pleasantly surprised to find recently that one of our local supporters, an aspiring hip hop artist who goes by the stage name "Naw~Ledge", compiled a track entitled "As-Sabiqun" which serves as somewhat of a "promo" song for the leadership and efforts of our movement. Check it out here.

For 30 years, we have supported and continue to support every Islamic cause dealing with the liberation and self-determination of Muslims. We have spoken out on behalf of our Muslim brothers and sisters from all around the globe. We have faced and continue to face the Zionists and other oppressive forces of this world. In December 2009, to bring our efforts to a higher, more focused level, we established the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare. As our institute has continued to gain progress, we have found the need to strengthen and expand our efforts.

1. Make the Oakland office of the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare fully operational by Spring 2011. Steps to physical preparation, in order to get started at 8109 MacArthur Blvd:

• Install a satellite dish, 2 high-speed CD/DVD duplicators, a video camera, and a capable computer with editing software.

2. Turn the Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare into a world class organization with offices in Oakland, CA, and Washington, DC. We aspire to achieve the following goals:

• Influence the direction of change.
• Continue to gain ground in the area of psychological guerilla warfare (our pioneering efforts have already led to measurable progress with tangible results).
• Harmonization and revivification of the Islamic movement in North America.

3. With regard to countering the Zionist plague, our immediate goals are to:

• Monitor Zionist networks, their connections, behavior patterns, modes of operation, etc.
• Analyze the Zionist grip on humanity established via the media and economics—how it influences government policies, produces Islamophobia, uses perception management, infiltrates and destabilizes our Islamic institutions and aspirations, etc.

4. Publish the As-Sabiqun book (a compilation of our newsletters) in a two-volume set.

5. Advance our media and outreach efforts by taking the following steps:

• Record “Masjid Al-Islam News”.
• Move forward with our filmmaking/moviemaking efforts.
• Improve and expand our CD and DVD duplication and distribution efforts.
• Increase our YouTube presence.
• Implement a new website design and setup—one which we can more effectively manage independently.

6. Offer consulting services and workshops for individuals, groups, and organizations within the Islamic movement and beyond (we are uniquely qualified, masha’Allah).

A proper analysis of the situation of Muslims locally, nationally, and internationally, would show us that Muslims are not in control of their lives, situations, or events. In selecting and defining a future for ourselves, we must be very brave and innovative. Without a plan or strategy, we are subject to wherever the winds of change take us; we surrender our self-determination and limit ourselves to prevalent trends, currents, and circumstances. We must remind ourselves: Our future should not be determined by our past—it should be determined by our imagination.

An Interview with Sis. Karima Al-Amin

In early July last year, Nadrat Siddique of New Trend Magazine conducted an extensive interview with sis. Karima Al-Amin, the wife of Imam Jamil and activist in her own right. The interview transcript was published in two parts, the latter of which was released in November. Needless to say, it provides a very unique perspective. For those who haven't yet caught it, here it is:

AN INTERVIEW WITH KARIMA AL-AMIN (Part 1 of 2)

The Fourth of July is my birthday. Each year, I seek an activity which expounds on Frederick Douglass' renowned musing "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July" and my social consciousness as a Muslim. This Fourth, I visited Atlanta to run the Peachtree 10K race, the nation's largest 10K (it boasts 50,000 participants) and to interview Karima Al-Amin, wife of Imam Jamil Al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown).

Imam Jamil Al-Amin is one of America's foremost political prisoners, currently being held at the infamous high-security prison in Florence, Colorado. I felt his case had received a degree of exposure, at least by independent Islamic media, but that far less was known about his wife and partner in the struggle, an activist in her own right.

Karima Al-Amin graciously granted me an interview at short notice, even though it meant according me her scant leisure time (the holiday was one of those rare occasions on which she closed her law office). I was to meet her soon after my race. When I called to confirm the details of our meeting, she expressed concern for my condition. Was I too tired and dehydrated after the race, being unaccustomed to Atlanta weather? And did I require more time to rest before our meeting? I was reminded of Imam Jamil, whose self-less concern for his visitors to the prison--even while he himself was being subjected to daily humiliation at the hands of prison guards--was fabled. And she insisted she would drive to my hotel so that I would not have to attempt to navigate unfamiliar territory. We agreed to hold the interview in my hotel room.

She entered the room, a slender, bespectacled woman, with quiet manner and majestic bearing, dressed modestly in light green hijab. But, as she began to speak, I realized this was easily the most eloquent, self-confident, and politically aware Muslim woman I'd encountered. She was clearly very seeped in Islamic faith; indeed, it may have been what allowed her (and hence her family) to survive the incredible trials they'd experienced; yet she was not ostentatious with her Arabic, nor haughty or judgmental of me or others.

Q: How did you meet Imam Jamil, and what attracted you to him initially?

A: I met him July 31, 1967. I remember that day because it was the first day I had a job. I had just graduated from the State University of Oswego. I was there four years. I majored in English with the aim of teaching K - 9th grades.

Imam Jamil walked into the job. He was staying with my supervisor. The job was on 135th Street, in Harlem. It was with Job Corps. I thought I'd keep the job a while.

The Imam walked in. At the time, he had a cadre of bodyguards. He was meeting Minister Farrakhan, so he asked the supervisor "See if she'll go to lunch with us." I was the only female at a big table of only brothers. I remember it was a big, big table, and we got back to the job at 5 PM.

That evening, Nina Simone was performing. She had invited Imam Jamil. In later years, he kept in touch with her. She autographed a photo for him that night, which I still have.

Q: Tell me about yourself and your background.

A: My grandmother and mother were Canadian. In 1929, my grandmother brought my mother, her sister, and one of her brothers to the U.S. after divorcing my grandfather. They were deported, and then returned. Then, in 1938, my grandmother went before a judge to ask for her citizenship. In 1942, while my grandmother was living in Los Angeles, Immigration denied her case. By 1942, my mother's sister had married. Her husband was in the entertainment business, and his father wrote "Dark Town Strutters Ball." She was a little activist and traveled broadly.

My mother lived in the building where La Guardia, Duke Ellington, and other musicians lived on Fifth Avenue in New York. My father was from the U.S. (from Virginia), and was in the navy. He and my mother married in 1942, and I was born years later in New York.

We moved to Riverton, built and owned by Metropolitan Life Assurance, in Harlem on Fifth Avenue. It was built mainly for African Americans so that we would not reside in the company's other private developments built for Europeans. In fact, my mother and father were considering being part of a class action suit to challenge the discriminatory practices of the company. Nevertheless, my parents moved to Riverton where I went to school in Harlem. and my mother was involved in the PTA.

My mother was involved in the PTA fighting zoning issues, and that was the first time the FBI came to the house. They thought the communists must be behind this, and we thought they were going to take our mother away.

My mother is from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. We would go back and forth to Canada to visit our grandfather, our aunts and uncles, and cousins. My father didn't want to tell a fib, so when they asked him is everyone in the car a U.S. citizen, he would just nod his head.

We're actually the descendants of runaway slaves. My sister and cousins are being tested to determine where we are from, but so far Spain, Portugal, and Europe are coming up, and not Africa. So, my family members still are exploring further testing.

My mother, after 30 years of being a housewife, went for a job with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Thurgood Marshall was the head of it. He wanted her to be in charge of payroll. To do this, she had to be bonded. Thurgood Marshall sponsored my mother to this end. I became the baby sitter for Thurgood Marshall and various African American judges and attorneys of the Legal Defense Fund.

I remember that my mother would tell my friends to put their dresses on so we could go to the Apollo. During the intermission, she had us walk around with buckets to collect money for whichever case was being fought in the South at the time.

Q: What led to your personal involvement in the Black Liberation struggle?

A: In college, I got involved with Friends of SNCC. That should have told me I'd wind up with the chair of SNCC.

I graduated in June and met Imam Jamil in July. My sister and her husband got arrested. They were with RAM (Revolutionary Action Movement). This was the first case in which middle class African Americans were involved in supporting the Black Liberation struggle.

RAM is mentioned in the original COINTELPRO papers along with SNCC, Stokely, H. Rap Brown, etc. My husband went to a rally for RAM before I met him.

By August 1967, the FBI had contacted me. They said, "You know your sister was framed. If you help us, we'll clear her." I told them I knew she'd be cleared because she was framed. The FBI wanted me to work for them to provide reports on Imam Jamil.

My parents were very involved with the community. We were a close knit family. I had a non-traumatic childhood (other than the fact that I was almost electrocuted). We did not go without anything. We traveled a lot. My father helped form an organization for African American city workers in transit.

My first trip to the South was in 1959 when a girlfriend of mine invited me to travel with her to visit her relatives. One day, we went shopping to look at earrings. I went to hand money to one of the workers, and she threw the money on the floor. Later, I was trying to buy a hot dog, and they would not sell it to me, because the hot dog stand was "Whites Only." Up in New York, we protested White Castle (fast food establishment).

My mother was very proper. When my husband's book came out, she would not say the name of the book, because it was called Die Nigger Die.

The FBI hounded my parents. They went to my father's job repeatedly. Despite this, my parents continued to be very supportive. I came from very smart, compassionate parents. They both died young (at age 51). One day, we went to the grocery store. When we came out, we found our car had a flat tire. We said, "Oh FBI."

Not long after, my father stopped at a gas station to fix a flat tire. He collapsed and died. Imam Jamil's mother died the week after that. Then, my mother went into the hospital. They discovered an aneurism on the right side of her brain. Then, they located another on the left, and she died two months later, in June. Then, in October, Imam Jamil was shot and went to the same hospital where my mother died. In fact, he was in the room next to where my mother spent two months before she died. All this happened in one year. We just didn't have time for grieving.

AN INTERVIEW WITH KARIMA AL-AMIN (Part 2 of 2)

In the second of this two-part interview, Karima Al-Amin, Atlanta-based activist, attorney, and wife of Imam Jamil Al-Amin (the former H. Rap Brown), speaks about her and her husband's conversion to Islam, the effects of Imam Jamil's incarceration on their family, and the many legal actions undertaken by the imam since his incarceration. Some of these he initiated without the aid of an attorney. Others were vigorously pursued by a legal team at a prominent Atlanta law firm, the imam's first truly competent and committed legal representation, which appeared on the scene a few years after his
conviction.

As I listened to Ms. Al-Amin, I was stunned by the resilience and resolve of the Al-Amins, undaunted by the challenges before them. Against all odds, they'd patiently continued a dignified and peaceful resistance. Most amazingly, they had not restricted themselves to the challenge of wrongs done to Imam Jamil, although this was, in itself, a huge litany. They were tackling the very constitutionality of laws which violated the rights of inmates, political prisoners, and other victims of the prison-industrial complex. In other words, from behind bars, the Imam, his wife at his "side," was fighting to "free the slave" while many seemingly free imams and others on the outside cowered in fear and silence.

Q: Tell me about Imam Jamil's transition from black radical to mainstream Muslim imam. Did you feel you had to influence him to repudiate or reconstruct that image into a more moderate one?

A: My sister's first husband was a Muslim from the Republic of Guinea. I remember they had a Qur'an on a stand, and they gave us a prayer rug before we were Muslim that we hung on our wall; consequently, that was one of our early exposures to Islam. My husband took his shahada in December 1971, while he was incarcerated in New York City. Brothers from the Dar-ul-Islam in Brooklyn entered the jails as chaplains and volunteers to hold classes on Islam. The transition to Islam was very natural for my husband because it did not compromise any of his positions.

I took my shahada a few months later, in February 1972, when Imam Jamil gave it to me. I still was reading about Islam after he became Muslim because I wanted to make sure I was becoming Muslim based on my belief. It was a natural flow for us to become Muslim. We never felt we had to explain the transition from his past as H. Rap Brown to Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, although the transition was confusing for those who did not understand my husband. After El Hajj Malik Shabazz, my husband was the next public figure in the Movement to become Muslim. We then saw other black liberators in the 1970s and 1980s become Muslims.

Q: What made you decide to attend law school?

A: Law was my third profession. Here in Atlanta, I worked for a 15-year period with two foundations giving money to grassroots organizations and working on desegregating public higher education and enhancing the traditionally black colleges and universities.I did not go to law school until 1992, while I was teaching English. When I was in high school, I considered law as a career. My mother worked at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund when Thurgood Marshall was the Executive Director, and lawyers were dispatched to the South to represent students and local people who were being arrested, brutalized,and killed. This certainly influenced my early thoughts on considering law. Also, once I married my husband, I was constantly with William Kunstler and at the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, as he and the organization represented my husband. And lastly, the fact that the government was continuing its efforts, COINTELPRO-style,to incarcerate my husband, was another factor that moved me finally to attend.

Q: What did you see as your role in the Al-Amin household?

A: I saw my role as a stabilizing one. I was not making speeches, and I wasn't out there in the public with my husband. I saw my role as maintaining peace at home. I was a teacher during our early years of marriage. My concentration was making sure we could eat together and be together as a family. It always amazed me when we heard people gasp and say, "I saw H. Rap Brown, and he was holding a child," or "I saw the Rap and he was holding a cat." Ordinary things he did shocked people because the media had dehumanized him. When things are moving wildly, it's necessary to have normalcy at home, so I would try to maintain a sense of normalcy in an abnormal world.

Q: What attitude or outlook to life did you adapt after you realized that your husband would be locked up for a long time? What has been your biggest challenge since his railroading?

A: Naturally to be stripped of a husband, a companion, is devastating. Because I came up through the struggle with him, I understood the challenges. Many people refer to my husband as the "last man standing." He was a COINTELPRO target and he has remained one. I understand his innocence, and the governmental efforts to silence him throughout a 43-year period. This gives me the strength to remain strong and by his side.

My biggest challenge was ensuring that I could provide for my family in my husband's absence. I was doing so many pro bono cases that I realized that I had to begin charging for my legal services. I was faced with raising a 12-year old son, who was very close to his father, and I had to monitor the psychological impact on him. He was a basketball son, and accustomed to seeing his father at all of his games since he was five years old. I had to move quickly to maintain his life as a youngster, and I could not miss a basketball game or school activity. My overarching challenge naturally was--and continues to be--to work to free my husband.

Q: Has Imam Jamil's incarceration influenced the career choices of your children? Do you think they will go to law school?

A: We have two children: Kairi and Ali. Kairi is 22 and Ali is 31. Kairi is in law school. He is in his second year, but wants to practice, perhaps, entertainment/sport or international contractual law. He graduated from high school when he was 16, and went to three universities before graduating, still on time. Kairi was in the eighth grade when his father was arrested, and during the trial he would come to court carrying his backpack. He was a trooper.

Q: Have the children visited their father in Florence, CO? Tell me about that visit.

A: Kairi and I visit Imam Jamil in Florence, Colorado. He is being held in the Supermax prison, 1400 miles away, which makes traveling very costly. It essentially takes a full day to travel there and another day to return home. It's really been a struggle, and we haven't been able to visit as often as we'd like. Florence is seen by many as a concentration camp for Muslim inmates. Imam Jamil is handcuffed at the waist behind a glass when we see him in one of the legal rooms. On the days we are with him, we are able to visit for approximately six hours. If he receives food during the visit, he has to hold his hands chained in front of him in order to eat. It is a very difficult position, and his wrists begin to swell.

The law firm now representing Imam Jamil pro bono also worked on suits for Guantanamo prisoners. One of their lead attorneys said that if he had to choose between Gitmo and Florence, he would choose Gitmo. Imam Jamil is held in solitary confinement, and Florence is a "no contact" institution, so the conditions are punitive and deplorable.

Q: Imam Jamil's projects to rid the West End community of drugs are well known, as was his mentoring of the youth. Have these projects continued, and what is the extent of your involvement with them?

A: I'm still involved with the community. It's a community I helped start with Imam Jamil and it is dear to me. Many of our children now are active in the community, and taking leadership roles, and it's wonderful to see and feel their energy. We have continued with classes, youth activities, and the Riyaadah that we started in 1982.

Our community under the leadership of my husband always included the youth in our family-oriented activities; therefore, mentoring the youth continues to be a focus.

Q: Do you feel that things have gotten worse in the city since Imam Jamil was locked up?

A: When he was around, there was some vibrancy in the neighborhood. We all miss his presence and his hard work to keep the ills from consuming our community. We can all agree these are drastic times for people, and this is reflected throughout the inner cities. My husband always reminded people that Islam is the medicine for the sick; it is the cure for all society's ailments.

Q: Unfortunately, the number of political prisoners has increased exponentially since your husband went to prison. What is your advice to the current generation of Muslim law students, as to how they should operate within the U.S. justice system? What should be their contribution to the Muslim community?

A: Imam Jamil was instrumental in getting a Muslim lawyer's group started. This was similar to what SNCC [Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee -editor] had,where attorneys represented civil rights workers on a pro bono basis. We have to get more attorneys who would be able to take on cases. Many Muslims who are arrested now have not committed criminal activities, but are arrested for "thought crimes." We need a band of attorneys to be able to represent Muslims who are being entrapped by informants. Family members of those arrested are draining their resources and are receiving minimal assistance from the Muslim community. We need to recognize that the divide-and-conquer strategy is working very well within the Muslim community, with the result that dissent is crushed and support for political prisoners is diminishing. We need activist attorneys to challenge constitutional violations and the unjust arrests so that families will not have to go to court with attorneys who are concerned only with billable hours.

Q: What is the current state of Imam Jamil's case?

A: Imam Jamil was convicted in 2002 on Georgia state charges. He immediately was transferred to the maximum state prison in Reidsville, Georgia, where he was held in administrative lockdown. Despite his physical isolation, his presence in the prison for other inmates had an electrical charge. While visiting him, we would see other inmates, passing by on their visits, raising their fists or giving salaams, and their visitors would do the same.

In 2006, the FBI released a report called "The Radicalization of Muslim Inmates in the Georgia Prison System." The report focused on the effort by Muslim inmates in the Georgia prison system to have Imam Jamil serve as imam over all Muslim Georgia inmates. Georgia officials realized that Imam Jamil did not initiate the effort, and although he agreed to stop the effort, the FBI launched its own investigation. We believe the report by the FBI was the final step in getting him moved out of Georgia, to the federal supermax prison where so many high profile Muslims are being held.

The Georgia conviction is still being challenged through a habeas corpus action to prove my husband's innocence. [A writ of habeas corpus is a request for a reversal of a conviction. Imam Jamil's habeas lists fourteen very compelling reasons why his conviction should be reversed.-editor]. That was filed in 2005. We are at the end of that state process, and attempting to move forward, and hopefully will have a ruling next year.

Q: So even though Imam Jamil was not convicted on any federal charges, he was moved from state to federal custody?

A: Yes, Imam Jamil was moved out of Reidsville without notification to his family or attorneys. The move was based on an agreement between the State of Georgia and the Federal Bureau of Prisons to take on state prisoners. Georgia pays the Federal Bureau of Prisons every month to house him. They whisked him away in a hot van, and had him sit for hours in 90-degree temperature until he developed chest pains, and had to be taken to an Atlanta hospital. We knew nothing about this. They kept him overnight, and then returned him to the airport for a flight to the Oklahoma City Federal Penitentiary. From there, he was taken to Florence, CO. The move alone violates the Bureau of Prisons' rule that an inmate must be housed within 500 miles of his home.

Q: Tell me about some of the lawsuits initiated by Imam Jamil.

A: Imam Jamil filed numerous grievances while in Reidsville and Florence, Colorado, that ultimately ended in his filing a lawsuit:

Legal Mail Lawsuit

This lawsuit was filed because the Reidsville prison staff continued to open legal mail from me to my husband. The Department of Corrections in Atlanta was notified that opening his legal mail in his absence was a violation of the department's standard operating procedure, and a First Amendment violation. The Southern District Court, in which the lawsuit was filed, ruled in his favor, and Georgia appealed. The case then went to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals for argument. At that point, the 11th Circuit appointed a prominent Atlanta-based attorney and his firm to represent my husband on a pro bono basis. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the action of the staff in opening legal mail from me to my husband was a First Amendment violation. Georgia appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court; that Court refused to hear Georgia's appeal.

Retaliation Lawsuit

From the day he entered the Reidsville Georgia prison, he was held in administrative 23-hour lockdown. He's never done a juma'a since he was incarcerated, from 2002 until now. So, we do have fundamental constitutional issues. We will continue to challenge the inhumane and punitive actions of the Georgia Prison system to prevent Imam Jamil's contact with other prisoners and the right to practice his religion during his incarceration. Additionally, we will challenge the retaliatory transfer from Georgia to a supermax "no contact" prison without his having a federal charge, conviction or sentence. We are very concerned about the impact solitary confinement has on the physical and mental condition of an inmate. [So, specific factors being challenged in the retaliation lawsuit include the imam's 23-hour per day lockdown in Reidsville, the violation of his religion rights within the Georgia prison system, and the gratuitous transfer to the Florence Supermax. -editor]

Challenge to the Prison Litigation Reform Act

The State has refused to settle our legal mail case; therefore, we are preparing for trial. In doing so, we first are challenging the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA). Our position is that a constitutional violation is sufficient to win punitive damages, just as a physical injury entitles one to punitive damages. Courts are divided on this issue. [The PLRA, as it stands, prevents Imam Jamil and others in his position from receiving punitive damages for violations such as the opening of his legal mail in his absence, on the grounds that the damage inflicted was not physical. -editor]. Our case will give the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals an opportunity to rule on this issue.

Q: What is the situation with Otis Jackson, the self-confessed shooter in the crime for which Imam Jamil was convicted?

A: Our attorneys have deposed Otis Jackson. His testimony, that he committed the actions for which Imam Jamil was convicted, has been consistent. So, we've made some headway, but it's taken a long time. One of the reasons the State said Otis couldn't have done it, is that he was wearing an electronic monitor. We talked to the maker of the monitor and learned that it is possible to beat the monitor. And in fact, he had a faulty electronic monitor.

Part of the habeas has been that Otis was not investigated. The prosecutor told our attorneys "Oh, he's crazy, like the other ones," and the attorneys froze and did nothing to investigate the confession or the monitoring device.

Q: Any final words for New Trend readers?

A: Imam Jamil was previously incarcerated [under the COINTELPRO era prosecutions of Black, Native American, and other leaders and activists -editor] for five years. He got out in 1976. Right after the 2002 conviction, the prosecuting attorney for the State said, "After 24 years, we finally got him." This confirmed Imam Jamil's position that it was a government conspiracy. Our immediate short-term goal is to have the Imam transferred back to Georgia, or to a federal prison within a 500-mile radius of his home. Our ultimate goal, naturally, is to exonerate Imam Jamil. We thank you for supporting Imam Jamil and our efforts to exonerate him.

Imam Musa & the DC Police

Many of us are aware of disturbing incidents involving police forces in the U.S. Many times, their brutality goes unnoticed and undocumented, but every once in a while, heinous crimes committed by those who've sworn to "uphold the public safety" are brought to light.

On the afternoon of November 3, 2010, DC police, for no stated reason, held at gunpoint two Muslim sisters, both of whom are respected teachers at our Southeast DC Islamic home-schooling co-op (based at Masjid Al-Islam)--one of whom was Imam Musa's wife. Though neither of the sisters were taken in, Imam Musa was called onto the scene and, after bringing public attention to the blatant harassment of the two sisters, was arrested. Though he was released later in the evening, this incident has brought to the surface several months and years of harassment and pestering carried out by the local police on behalf of "higher powers". After the incident, Imam Musa prepared an open letter to the DC police, which was posted on police cars and distributed to local residents. To read its text, click on the flier image above.

On a related noted, only a few days after the incident with the DC police, Imam Musa was coincidentally (by Allah's will) featured on an RT news piece in which he was asked to comment on the killing of 22-year old Oscar Grant in Oakland, CA, at the hands of a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police officer who was recently sentenced. On January 1, 2009, Grant was shot and killed by Johannes Mehserle while he was lying restrained on a train platform. The shooting was captured on several cell phone cameras and the footage is widely available on the Internet. A few days ago, on November 5, 2010, Mehserle was sentenced to two years, minus time served. The RT news segment can be seen below:

On Fasting

The human being, Allah’s (swt) greatest creation, has been blessed with a combination of characteristics which, if used properly, can enable him to steadily develop as His khalifah (vicegerent, representative). Conversely, if these very same characteristics are left unchecked, they will lead the human being to a debased existence, making him the lowest of the low.

We are a complex combination of body, mind, and soul; the animalistic and the spiritual. We have within us all attributes of the physical and carnal tendencies that are peculiar to animals, yet there also exists within us the luminous element of spirituality which is the characteristic of angels. The success and salvation of man depends upon the subordination of the animal self to the spiritual self. His sensual instincts and desires must be channeled within the proper limits assigned by Allah (swt). This is possible only when the animal aspect of the human personality surrenders in habitual obedience to the spiritual aspect, instead of constantly working against it. This is where fasting has helped us.

Ramadan and the Islamic Movement

Ramadan serves as a training ground not only for individual struggle (internal jihad), but collective struggle as well. During this period, we focus on our duty to Allah (swt), His Messenger (saw), to leadership, and the general body of believers. As we purify and cleanse ourselves, we review our past actions and make plans for better and more refined output. As we feel appreciation and gratefulness for Allah’s (swt) bounties, we remember those who are oppressed and deprived, and ask ourselves how we can be of assistance to them. As we share in the spirit of togetherness with family and friends, we make preparations to concentrate our efforts, activities, and energies on building strong Islamic institutions which will serve as lighthouses in a society burdened with jahiliyyah.

As Muslims, we must approach fasting in Ramadan as a blessing and opportunity to purify our intentions to engage in sincere Islamic work. We should refocus our attention on who we are and where we want to go. This will furnish us with a clear image of the work that must be done. It will also energize us to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve our lofty and noble goals.

Our Environment

The Zionist Americans have created and sustained a wave of Islamophobia in order to justify and continue its global war on Islam. Through perception management, the peoples of the world—including Muslims—have been subjected to a constant diet of “terror” and “terrorism” via TV, websites, movies, books, and other media, to such a degree that they make an automatic psychological association between the beautiful Deen of Islam on the one hand, and barbaric violence on the other. Islam has been made to seem like a religion of fanatics and suicide bombers, and the peace-loving Muslims of Iraq and Afghanistan have been made out to be warmongers. By establishing this image in the public mind, the Zionist Americans have made it easy to justify their invasion and brutal murder of innocent Muslims across the globe and keep the Muslims here frozen in a defensive posture.

Today’s Message

We at Masjid Al-Islam in Southeast Washington, DC, have been standing up against Zionist American oppression and psychological warfare for 30 years. As Muslims native to North America, we have gladly accepted this responsibility. Today, our focus is to maintain the following policies in our work:

• Re-Africanization of the Islamic movement in North America. The vibrancy of the homegrown Islamic movement in North America (the Islamic Party, Dar al-Islam movement, etc.) was replaced, over time, by groups and organizations which have subjected their goals, ideas, and aspirations to the dictates of the U.S. government. This process has had devastating effects on the Islamic movement here, draining it of all dynamism and independence, and confining it within the status quo. Several African-American leaders and speakers, eager for financial stability, prosperity, popularity, etc., allowed themselves to be firmly incorporated within this costly detour. The rightful torchbearers of the Islamic struggle in America today will be those who have not given in to these low motives and have remained consistently involved in our historical struggle against the status quo.

• De-Israelization of the Islamic movement in North America. The global Islamic movement has been littered with infiltrators, informers, saboteurs, destabilizers, and munafiqs who, disguised as Muslims, commit harmful acts around the world on behalf of the FBI, CIA, and Mossad in order to justify and perpetuate the oppression of our Ummah. These elements are meant to sow discord, division, and disunity; to pacify the Muslims by making Islam a merely “personal” affair; to create and promote approaches to Islam which will be harmoniously subservient to the international Zionist and imperialist agenda; and to ensure that the Muslims remain in a defensive position, exhausting all of their time, energy, and resources on ineffective and unworthy goals. As Muslims, we must always define our own struggle and steer clear of these traps and snares.

As a community, we have survived over 30 years of every imaginable fitnah, including saboteurs, infiltrators, and agent provocateurs sent by the FBI, NSA, Homeland Security, and others. Yet, we are still here, ready to serve. We will continue to stand up on behalf of Islamic causes around the world, including human, animal, and Earth rights. We want to rise to a level necessary to combat the evil forces at work. The Islamic Institute for Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare needs your monetary help. It's the holy month of Ramadan and many of us are busy fulfilling the obligation of fasting and performing extra acts of worship, such as nafl prayers, dhikr, du'as, etc. Meanwhile, our Palestinian brothers and sisters are being slowly and silently starved to death. Can we do anything more for them than make du'as?

As we work to purify ourselves during this holy month, we are presented with an opportunity to go beyond du'as. On Friday, Sept. 3rd, join us at Dupont Circle at 11am as we gather for the annual Al-Quds Day rally. Insha'Allah, this rally will provide more than just a momentary, one-time emotional invigoration. We will provide resources for participation in a year-round consumer boycott of several American companies that provide economic support to the Zionist apartheid system.

What is Al-Quds Day?

Al-Quds is Arabic for Jerusalem, the Holy Land. Yawm-al Quds or Al-Quds Day is a day of solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians in their struggle against the Zionist-apartheid system of Israel. Al-Quds Day also extends beyond Palestine to support all oppressed people in their struggles across the world. All over the world, rallies and marches are held on this day, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, in order to pledge solidarity with those struggling to live in dignity, in a world free from oppression and injustice.

This day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the oppressed in their struggles all over the world, from Palestine to Iraq, from Congo to Honduras, and from China to right here in our own backyards in the United States. On September 3, 2010 at 11 am, join us and other local community leaders and activists for this historical protest and pledge your solidarity with those seeking a just peace in Palestine and around the world.

A Special Ramadan Appeal

It has been over 10 years and Imam Jamil Al-Amin is still locked down in a cage for a crime he didn't commit--a crime that someone else has actually confessed to. The U.S. judicial system remains adamant upon detaining an innocent man. Not only that, they transferred the Imam to even more oppressive living conditions in 2007, when he was sent from Georgia State Prison in Reidsville to the maximum-security, underground federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, known as “Florence ADMAX”, despite his not having any federal charges.

While Imam Jamil is stuck underground looking at the same walls every day for 23 hours, we enjoy the sun's light, seeing nature, and breathing in fresh air; moving about freely from place to place as we like.

While Imam Jamil is denied all human contact--rendering him unable to touch even his wife or son when they visit--we embrace our families, our children, and feel their warmth nearly every day of our lives.

While Imam Jamil remains ever-concerned about the Muslim community, but powerless to help (of course, he still inspires us through his writings and talks, and his spirit of resistance), many of us have the ability and capacity to actually make a difference.

With the above in mind, please exercise your ability to help Imam Jamil. When Imam Jamil was out here with us, he worked tirelessly for the Muslims in the U.S. and abroad. Now, what will we do for him? We encourage you to donate whatever you can--even if it is just $5--to help Imam Jamil and his family. Sis. Karima, Imam Jamil's wife, recently confirmed that under these harsh and unjust circumstances, the Imam has managed to keep his struggling spirit alive, masha'Allah. On Behalf of the Forgotten in Our Ummah

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: "Every Muslim is a Muslim's brother. He should neither harm him nor leave him alone when others treat him unjustly (but try to help him). Whomever will fulfill the need of a brother, Allah (swt) will fulfill his need, and whoever will remove a distress of a Muslim, he will find a distress of his removed on the Day of Requital, and whomever will hide the shame of a Muslim, his sins will be hidden by Allah (swt) on the Last Day." My name is Abdul Alim Musa. I am the imam of Masjid Al-Islam, which has locations in Washington, DC, and Oakland, CA, and the Amir of As-Sabiqun, an Islamic movement based in America which aims to establish self-sustaining Islamic communities across the country (for more info, visit www.sabiqun.org).

As Muslims, we are prescribed to look after one another, especially when our fellow believers are facing serious hardship or difficulty. Many of us have forgotten about the toll that U.S. government oppression has taken on our community. We have started our fasting today based on several moon sightings which were confirmed on Wednesday evening. For those who are in the DC area, we would like to invite you and your family and friends to our nightly iftars and Tarawih prayers at Masjid Al-Islam / 4603 Benning Road SE / Washington, DC 20019. We would be delighted to have you share in the spirit of togetherness and taqwa!

Every year, confusion erupts over the correct start of Ramadan. A segment of our community bases their start on any international sighting of the new crescent moon; another segment bases it strictly on what the Saudi "authorities" decide; others base it on a regional sighting; and there are still others who start Ramadan based on calculation, regardless of moon-sighting (as is the case with ISNA and the Fiqh Council of North America). Here at Masjid Al-Islam, and As-Sabiqun in general, we start our Ramadan based on a reliable, confirmed regional sighting. As a note, this normally coincides with the majority of global sightings.

Sighting the moon has been the traditional approach of Muslims since the time of the Holy Prophet (saw). We do not intend to abandon this Sunnah, as unfortunately many Islamic organizations, centers, and masjids have.

This is a message of solidarity to attendees of the DC Hidayah Conference from Masjid Al-Islam in Southeast Washington, DC.

As we continue in a great quest to build a new world, with all of its possibilities, the world’s enlightened people are coming closer to their true mission of fair custodianship (khilafah) and administration of the Earth and its resources in a way that will keep it healthy and wholesome, as Allah (swt) created it.

In the meantime, there is a one-eyed monster which is determined to maintain a world of oil spills, global warming, war, and incessant aggression. It has created and sustained a wave of Islamophobia (a persistent illogical or abnormal fear of Islam tailored by Western media on behalf of the CIA, FBI, Mossad, RAW, etc.) in order to justify and continue its global war on Islam. It has also kept up a steady dose of psychoterrorism, a phenomenon whereby the peoples of the world—including Muslims—are subjected to a constant diet of “terror” and “terrorism” via TV, websites, movies, books, and other media, to such a degree that they begin to make an automatic psychological association between the beautiful Deen of Islam on the one hand, and barbaric violence on the other. This process is also known as perception management. By it, Islam is made to seem like a religion of fanatics and suicide bombers, and the peace-loving Muslims of Iraq and Afghanistan are made out to be warmongers. Once this image is established in the public mind, it becomes easy to justify the invasion and brutal murder of innocent Muslims across the globe. It becomes easy to keep the Muslims here frozen in a defensive posture. All of this is built on a false image—not reality. This process, in turn, portrays the true villains—the RAW, CIA, FBI, Mossad, etc.—as heroes fighting for the “greater good.”

Inside the U.S., our movement has steadily carried on a successful campaign of psychological guerilla warfare. We have organized demonstrations for the last 30 years, in which we have spoken out on behalf of Islamic causes around the world, including human and animal rights. We have no fear of the FBI, Mossad, or any other Nazi-type of governmental organization. We have withstood every imaginable fitnah—from sabotage, infiltrators, agent provocateurs… to unexplainable huge fines, radical tax increases on our properties, and continuous “accidental” destruction and diversion of our assets, both human and material. These speakers—mostly American, white and black—were paraded around America as experts in da’wah and the subject of “how to become more American while remaining a semi-Muslim.”

There is one person who, despite over 30 years of Islamic work and a 97% accuracy rate in forecasting the behavior of the Zionist-occupied American government, has been kept totally absent from all the Islamic conferences, conventions, seminars, and lecture halls in America. Why is it that Imam Abdul Alim Musa, founder of As-Sabiqun, has been isolated and/or undermined by virtually all other Islamic centers, groups, and organizations? This is perhaps best reflected by the longevity of As-Sabiqun: in spite of constant setbacks and opposition, As-Sabiqun has endured 15 years of existence as a nationwide movement, and if we regard the establishment of the first Masjid Al-Islam as our starting point, then we count 30 years. This has only been possible through the grace of Allah (swt), who blessed us with a strong leadership with a good grasp on the times that we live in.

The newsletters we have recently uploaded onto our website will give our readers a view into the thinking, planning, and strategizing that has gone into--and continues to go into--our movement work. They include our To-Do Lists of recent years (this year's is coming soon), one on the Anti-Terrorism Bill passed in 1996 and another on 9/11, and Imam Musa's most recent writings on strategy and strategic management. The to-do lists provide a picture of what our work really boils down to: small objectives that lead up to bigger goals. Although to-do lists have always been a part of our planning process, it is only in recent years that they have been published in our newsletter format. We are uploading them onto our site to give our supporters and those interested in As-Sabiqun an idea of the nitty-gritty. Let it be known that when it comes to As-Sabiqun, it's not "all talk".

The newsletters on the Anti-Terrorism Bill and 9/11, from June 1999 and March 2002, respectively, give guidance and clarity for pivotal moments in our contemporary history as Muslims in North America. They cover issues that are defining issues in terms of Muslim leadership here in the U.S.

Finally, there are Imam Musa's recent writings on the topics of strategy and management. "Strategy," from Sept. 2007, provides a comprehensive overview of our approach and understanding of environmental circumstances throughout the years. It is a testament to the steadfastness of our leadership and direction. "Strategic Management under Conditions of Repression," from Oct. 2008, is essential reading for those who consider themselves to be supporters of the Islamic movement in North America.

These writings should be taken for exactly what they are: not mere intellectual acrobatics, but insight born from years of struggle and hard work.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Who sought martyrdom with sincerity will be ranked by Allah among the martyrs even if he died on his bed.” (Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah, nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad, died the death of a hypocrite.” (Muslim)

Described by some as a "favorite Muslim" of Islam-haters (Daniel Pipes calls him "brave" and "creative"), and by others as a "self-loathing Muslim", Nawash gained notoriety a few years ago as the odd personality behind the unpopular "March Against Terror" held in DC, which voiced support for U.S.-sponsored "freedom and democracy in the Middle East and Muslim world". For several years, the role model for the As-Sabiqun movement has always been Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik Shabazz). On February 15, 2010, Masjid Al-Islam (Oakland) will, insha’Allah, be celebrating the martyrdom of this noble individual.

45 years have passed since February 21, 1965, yet while many have honored Malcolm X in speeches, lectures, eulogies, movies, posters, and various events and celebrations, no one has accepted his mission. For over 30 years, the As-Sabiqun movement and Masjid Al-Islam has attempted to expand on Malcolm X’s ideas, principles, and his work, which was cut short by his assassination. In the past, our great leaders rose to the occasion of the times in which they lived: Douglass rose up against slavery with his activism in the abolitionist movement; Booker T. Washington rose to correct the errors of Reconstruction; Paul Robeson rose up against Jim Crow; Martin Luther King, Jr., rose up against segregation, racial inequality, and injustice; and Malcolm X rose up against racism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, and global oppression.

Now, the torch has been passed over to us and we are in a position to either accept or reject the challenges related to the current reality with which we are faced. We accept! We are living in a time when there is a global war being waged against Islam and Muslims. Each people must rise to the challenges and opportunities of their time. In the U.S.A., none of our able organizations are willing to face the global monster of Zionist Americanism. Everyone is aware of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti and help is needed everywhere. However, due to the small number of Muslims in Haiti (they represent only 0.04% of the population), much of that help will not be focused on them specifically. We have an opportunity to honor our covenant with Allah (swt) by helping one of the Muslim communities there. The community of Masjid at-Tawhid in Port-Au-Prince is very young. All of the community members' homes were destroyed, but the masjid is still standing (alhamdulillah) and many of them have sought refuge there. They are in need of basic supplies (food, clothes, water), but due to the tenuous nature of shipping supplies, we are requesting monetary donations to wire to them directly.

Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah was assassinated on October 28, 2009 in Detroit, Michigan, by the FBI. It is our duty at this time, as freedom-loving Muslims, to support Imam Luqman's family and community.

It is related by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "Every Muslim is a Muslim's brother. Washington's Imam Musa: FBI assassinated Luqman Ameen Abdullah to intimidate the Black American Muslim community

The following is the transcript of a Press TV interview with US Muslim activist and director of Masjid Al-Islam in Washington, DC, Imam Abdul Alim Musa, on the recent killing of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah by US federal agents during an alleged shootout in Detroit.

Over one thousand American Muslims gathered in the city of Detroit on Saturday to mourn the prayers leader who was shot several times by the FBI in an apparent attempt to arrest him.

As well as giving a new angle into what actually occurred, Imam Musa's intriguing comments can also provide an insight into the current atmosphere of the American Muslim community and the US establishment's attitude toward Islam in general.

Q: The FBI has said that Imam Luqman resisted arrest and shot the police dog before being killed. Do you have any other information on what took place?

A: I am now reading what I have in my hand, the indictment from the United States court. This is about a 42-page indictment, and this indictment has information that was given to the federal government by certain informants. I want to read a portion of this document to give you an idea why we call the Imam Luqman killing an assassination by the FBI.

If you notice the government, in order to do something to you, they have to prearrange a scenario so that they do whatever crime they want to commit. When they wanted to invade Iraq they said there were weapons of mass destruction. So, this is what they said. Although it wasn't true, it justified the invasion.

I would like to read what source number one, who is an FBI informant, says about Imam Luqman. This is in December 2007. It says source number one testified that on many occasions he heard Luqman Abdullah preach that Islam should be spread through violent jihad and advocate violence against the government and against law enforcement.

Abdullah told his followers that if the police tried to take his weapon or tried to apprehend him he would respond with violence and they will have to shoot him before they can arrest him. Ok, this is a government informer giving the government the information that they want to justify using violent means against Imam Luqman.

So, what we are saying is that we refer to his killing as an assassination by the federal government. This is to intimidate the rest of the Muslim community. The Muslims in America are under a lot of pressure and the masjids, the Muslim centers, the community centers are full of government infiltrators, spies, and saboteurs who try to break the back of this wonderful Islamic movement in North America.

So what the government is doing by assassinating Imam Luqman is it's trying to intimidate the Muslim community, especially the black community. And I say that because the immigrant community, which is about half of the Muslims in the United States, and the African American Muslim community, which form the other half, have different views about Islam in America and how it should be fostered.

The immigrant community has been frightened since the 9/11 terrorist attack and they practice a kind of American style Islam. Now, the killing of Imam Luqman is to intimidate us. But our message is different. We will not be intimidated by the United States government or by the FBI.

We would like to state clearly what Imam Luqman said on one occasion. I have from the same information something that source two, another government informer, said about Imam Luqman. This is on December 12, 2007. Source two stated taht he had been with Luqman Abdullah outside the masjid on that day and he was able to surreptitiously record their conversation.

S2 told Abdullah he had authority to donate five thousand dollars to pay to have someone do something during the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit.

Abdullah said he would not be involved in injuring innocent people for no reason. If there is something to be done, it is going to be legitimate. This is what we are saying.

This is from the FBI's own records. They had sent an informer to donate five thousand dollars to have Imam Luqman do some terrorist type thing at the Super Bowl, which was in Detroit in 2006. Imam Luqman, by sticking to his principles of Islam, said--and this is recorded on page four of the FBI indictment--it says that Imam Luqman said he would not be involved in injuring innocent people for no reason.

You see, so, this is the principle that we all follow here in America. This is in their own FBI record. They knew, already, that Imam Luqman was not violence prone. They already knew that he would not do any harm to any citizen, by his own words, that that was not legitimate and that we would not harm innocent people for no reason.

But when you listen to the television and the radio and all of the news they try to portray Imam Luqman and his group, and the larger group, al-Ummah [not Ummah, which is usually interpreted as the overall Muslim community] as violence prone; as wanting to establish an independent Islamic state in North America ruled by Sharia law and that Imam Jamil Abdullah Al Amin, which is the leader who is now in a super max prison up in Florence, Colorado would be its leader.

Q: Can you give us a little bit of information about this group, al-Ummah. Can you explain a little bit about it?

A: Al-Ummah is led by Imam Jamil Abdullah Al Amin who was a great civil rights leader during the 1960s. He converted to Islam in 1972 and became a part of one of our great Islamic movements in North America called the Dar al-Islam Movement.

When that movement broke up in about 1980 and 1981 Imam Jamil Al Amin inherited or kept together one section of that group. That group became known as al-Ummah or basically "the Community," and so, they have centers all around America, in Atlanta, in Detroit, in many cities; in Philadelphia, and other cities around the country.

It is mostly an African American organization and it believes in the principle of strong leadership, and so, the goal of this leadership, and I am telling you from experience; I have worked very closely with the brothers, we have been friends and associates for 25 or 30 years now; this group's goal is to spread Islam in America, not through violent means, but by what the Quran says - "Bring to the way of the Lord through wisdom and preaching."

So their goal is to invite the American people to Islam through beautiful preaching, through Da'wa [Arabic for invitation], through Tabligh [Arabic for advertisement], through all the legitimate means, but the government in America is fearful of any group that has any Islamic organization with good, strong leadership, especially if that leadership has ties to Muslims around the world, which Imam Jamil Al Amin does.

So the goal of the government is to destroy this group and to send the message to other African Americans that the federal government will not allow any unified, organized Islamic activities to be carried out inside of the United States of America. But we have a message for them. We will not be intimidated by the government of the United States of America.

The character assassination of Imam Luqman by the FBI and its media partners is being used to justify his murder. It is apparent, due to what he stood for, that his murder (martyrdom) was based on forethought and malice. Sending in a police attack dog, after all, was a clear provocation. Imam Luqman never pointed or fired a gun at FBI agents. They claim that they shot him after he shot their attack dog, which they unleashed on him. Imam Luqman was shot 18 times by them. Let us connect some dots here:

"The authorities had been monitoring him for years."

"The complaint shows the FBI built its case with the help of confidential sources close to Abdullah who recorded conversations."

"The document notes conversations he had with undercover agents and federal informants..."

"They’re staging the whole thing up," said his son, actor Omar Regan. "They put puzzles together, throw it on the media, attack their character, and try to make everything look worse than it is. That’s just what they do because they have to look good."

First and foremost, we are unconcerned with the portrayal of Imam Luqman and the National Ummah painted by the Zionist corporate media which has, for years, churned out a tainted and slanted truth in order to keep viewers psychologically and politically managed. Instead, we judge Imam Luqman according to our own standards. For the many years in which we knew him, Imam Luqman was a good friend, a person of noble character, charitable in deed, and always with a ready word against the unjust oppressors of this earth. Since Imam Jamil's imprisonment in 2000, Imam Luqman was strongly committed to raising funds for the Imam and his family. We pray that Allah (swt) accept his martyrdom and forgive him of any shortcomings. Please keep him and his family in your du'as.

Imam Musa & Hip Hop

In recent years, Imam Musa has often noted the heavy impact that media--and the arts in general (movies, music, etc.)--have on people. In a khutbah given in late July, he noted that with rap music in particular, it has been manipulated--by outside forces--from its original flavor of conscious struggle and self-determination, and insisted that the original spirit of rap music must be brought back today in order to inspire and educate masses of people who have lost direction due to the pervasive influence of the Zionist and corporate media. This could be just one of the weapons in our arsenal as we continue our multi-faceted [non-military] guerrilla offensive against ignorance and anti-Islam.

With this being said, we were pleasantly surprised to discover recently an audio clip from one of Imam Musa's khutbahs featured on a track entitled "God-Given" by Muslim hip hop artist Yusuf Abdul-Mateen. Br. Yusuf forms one-half of the hip hop team Blak Madeen, a unique and sociopolitically apt duo which hails from Boston, MA.
